This will be my third consecutive year djing the mainroom countdown set at one of Vancities biggest, baddest NYE events 'Midinight Stardust' hosted by Brass Fan Productions. Its a 2000 person banquet party at the westin bayshore in downtown Vancouver, with indoor firework countdown that is ridiculous. Also headlined by Vancouver heavyweights Craig Smart, Rosette Luve, and Destineak. Gonna be FIYAAA! so pumped...
There comes a time in every mashup djs life when he realises that the art of performance djing will never be what it once was. AM is dead, Z-trip is now underground, and people are shovelling cash and accolades at dudes who admit to doing nothing more than 'pressing play' when they step behind their non-existant 'decks'. why? cause they create amazing music. Some of my collegues believe this is a trend, and soon enough we'll go back to the 'good'ol'days' and people will again start caring about fast cuts, innovative mixing, and the ability to bridge music styles, rip through multiple genres and truly innovate behind the decks. While this might be true, its deffinitely only part of the picture. The reality is that, as far as the digitization of music is concerend, we are only at the tip of the iceberg. Computers and exponential increase in computing power is rapidly changing the enire world, not the least of which the world of art, and in particular music. This isn't slowing down any time soon.
Computer music is here to stay and here to grow, and while DJs (in the conventional sense of someone who jockeys discs for your entertainment) no longer run the DJ market, musicialns (in the conventinal sense of 'someone tat plays an musical instrument') no longer run the music market. Even though I'll probabbly never love producing like I love performing, its time for me and other djs like me to get on board, to cast off into the sea of online music and start generating original content alongside the bizzillion other people banging away in home studios. Franklly, I'm excited, I've got a long way to go,but there's more power and software in my new laptop than most full sized studios had in the 90s, and I'm sure its gonna be a bumpy road but, but hey that's nothing new in the music biz. Below is a original remix of mine, one of many to come as i learn, experiment, and try to find my sound. hope you enjoy it
iMovie... it's the shit yo. ;P...
So I recently had a chance to DJ on the strangest city on the planet. Located on a prehistoric lakebed in the middle of the Nevada desert, this city houses 60 thousand residents and exists for only one week a year. What takes place during that week is virtually beyond words.
Imagine a city, 100% dedicated to artistic creativity, total libertarianism, and social deconstruction. Basically a Las Vegas… without money or greed… combined with the Tupac California love music video… taking place inside the imagination of Hunter s Thompson.
Where did I Dj you might be wondering? Well, it was pretty standard really, basically 70 ft motor home, with the walls ripped off, and upper and lower re-enforced dance floors installed, wall to wall LED lighting, and a 80 thousand watt stereo system built in. basically the best club you’ve ever been to… on wheels. Oh, and did I mention there’s well over a hundred of these, of designs ranging from jiant sperms to pirate ships, some as long as 250 ft and sporting 3 levels? Oh and about half spit enormous gouts of flame into the air every couple minutes.
Other than these insane cars cruising everywhere day and night there’s several 5000+ capacity stages, several dozen sub stages, and monolithic pieces of wooden art sprouting up across the playa, most of which get burned to the ground at some point, which is definitely entertaining.
If art and music isn’t your thing there’s still a city replete with every, and I mean EVERY, whacked out forM of entertainment you could think of. From Yoga, to tightrope walking, to anal fisting workshops, to bible studies, its got it all… for one week… then its burned to the ground… and the 51 week countdown begins.
